Richard Unterberger
describes this song as "beautifully mournful violin introduce rolling, doomy riffs,
over which Hazelwood sings of a velvet morning when he'll be straight,
and open up someone's gate into some sort of paradise... Nancy
intercedes in her most la-la sort of voice, singing angelically of
flowers and daffodils--and just as suddenly, we're back into Lee's
spooked-out ruminations about an occultish life-giving force named
Phaedra."

The film for the song juxtaposes Nancy in woods and waterfalls with flowers and Lee
on horseback on the seashore. There's just something in the unreality
and setting (and the year it was filmed) that makes me think of the
end section of Planet of the Apes. There is a remarkable
clarity to the imagery that makes all modern music videos look murky
in comparison, as if technology has been lost since 1967. Nancy's fashions
will remind you of the Austin Powers movies.
Lyrics
Male:
Some velvet morning when I'm
straight.
I'm gonna open up your gate.
And maybe tell you 'bout
Phaedra
and how she gave me life
and how she made it in.
Some velvet
morning when I'm straight.
Female:
Flowers growing on the
hill.
Dragonflies and daffodils.
Learn from us very much.
Look at us
but do not touch.
Phaedra is my name.
Male:
Some velvet
morning when I'm straight.
I'm gonna open up your gate.
And maybe tell you
'bout Phaedra
and how she gave me life
and how she made it in.
Some
velvet morning when I'm straight.
Female:
Flowers are the
things we knew.
Secrets are the things we grew.
Learn from us very
much.
Look at us but do not touch.
Phaedra is my name.
Some velvet morning when I'm straight.
Flowers growing
on the hill.
I'm gonna open up your
gate.
Dragonflies and daffodils.
And
maybe tell you 'bout Phaedra
Learn from us very
much.
And how she gave me life.
Look at
us but do not touch.
and how she made it in.
